“Filling the form” means to respect the creative process by making the commitment each day to take the next required step, and then the next step after that. We simply make small changes and take small actions right now where we are, with what we have available, to ultimately shift the trajectory of our creative journey. This is the final post related to Week 8 of the creative discovery and recovery program outlined in The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron.
Put Doubt Aside, for Now
This day by day creative process, with its focus on the small, daily steps means working regularly without yielding to self doubt, the inner critic (you know you have one!) or other feelings of inadequacy. Put those thoughts aside for now and take the next small step!
Don’t Scare Yourself
Filling the form means not engaging in grand, dramatic thinking and blowing things out of proportion. You do not have to make huge leaps or drastic irrevocable life changing decisions to engage in your creativity right now. Know that taking the do-able necessary small steps, one after another, is enough.
Avoid, too, considering the odds of success. According to Cameron, this is the equivalent of “drinking emotional poison” leading to a “severe and toxic emotional bender” — ultimately causing us to lose hope, become utterly discouraged, and block accordingly.
Procrastination or Anxiety Addiction?
Often, we procrastinate about taking the next step. Instead of taking action, we use our time and energy worrying …while doing laundry or bathing the dog or surfing the interwebz. Cameron believes “blocked creatives have an active addiction to anxiety. We prefer low grade pain and occasional heart-stopping panic attack to the drudgery of small and simple daily steps in the right direction.”
Do it Small, Do it Now
Filling the form means working with what we have instead of complaining about where we are not and what we don’t have; filling the form means taking the small actions that lead, ultimately, to larger movement. For today, find the small answers, instead of worrying about the grand finale somewhere off down the road.
What could you do right now to start where you are and support your creativity? What small answer must you find today? Do that thing!
